Proton VPN review (2026): our test
The only genuinely free VPN with no data cap, based in Switzerland. Privacy first, and trying a VPN for free with no card details.
- ✓Free plan with no data cap (3 countries, 1 device)
- ✓Swiss HQ, open-source apps, public audits
- ✓Excellent for a Swiss IP
- ✓Secure Core for sensitive use
- –Free plan does not unblock streaming
- –Pricier than Surfshark and CyberGhost on paid plans
Speed and streaming
The Plus plan unblocks Netflix, Prime Video and UK channels well, with good speeds thanks to VPN Accelerator. The free plan does not do streaming, and says so openly.
Privacy
The benchmark. Swiss HQ, open-source apps, published audits, Secure Core (double hop via Switzerland or Iceland). If you are a journalist, lawyer or simply demanding, it is the obvious choice.
Price and refund
Free plan with unlimited data (1 device). Plus at about €4.49 a month on two years, the priciest of the four. 30-day pro-rated guarantee.
Verdict
If you searched "free VPN", start here: it is the only honest free option. For streaming, upgrade to Plus or pick NordVPN.
